Inaugural Forum Nets Commitments To Strengthening Somali Fisheries

Hundreds of Somali fishers, entrepreneurs, investors, and policy makers gathered in Puntland recently to promote sustainable development of the Somali fishery sector.

Garowe, Somalia –  Hundreds of Somali fishers, entrepreneurs, investors, and policy makers gathered in Puntland recently to promote sustainable development of the Somali fishery sector. The event was co-hosted by Secure Fisheries and Shuraako, programs of One Earth Future, and the Puntland Ministry of Fisheries. The forum brought together fisheries ministers from each of the Somali Regional Member States and the Federal Deputy Minister of Fisheries. The ministers committed to end illegal fishing and issuing offshore fishing licenses for the benefit of the Somali people. They also agreed to meet quarterly to build the fishing sector. Secure Fisheries’ Director Kaija Hurlburt said, “The forum was driven by a spirit of coordination and commitment towards building a sustainable fishing sector.“
