As part of the Fisher Field School project, Secure Fisheries and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization distributed fishing equipment to three villages in the Zeila district of Somaliland. The project, funded by USAID, aims to restore assets supporting the fisheries value chain in coastal communities that saw the destruction of their grazing and farm land from drought since 2015, followed by significant infrastructure damage and losses to both the fisheries and livestock sectors from Cyclone Sagar in May 2018. The distributed equipment included refrigerators, solar panels, and generators to increase cold storage capacity and power the fisheries sector with clean energy. After years of challenges, Zeila’s fishers are excited to get back to business.
